Kinai Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 29, 2026
Kinai is a self-care companion app built with privacy as a first principle. This policy explains what we do — and don’t do — with your information.
The short version
- We do not have user accounts.
- We do not have servers that store your personal data.
- Everything you do in Kinai (check-ins, mood, walks, conversations with Kin, badges, bond level) lives only on your iPhone.
- We do not sell, share, or analyze your data.
- We do not use third-party analytics or ad networks.
- If you delete the app, your data is gone.
What stays on your device
- Your name, age, and onboarding answers
- Your Kin’s name, vibe, and avatar
- Your mood check-ins and journal entries
- Walk routes, steps, and timestamps
- Your conversations with Kin
- Memories you’ve saved
This data is stored using Apple’s standard local storage (UserDefaults and the app sandbox). It is not transmitted off your device by Kinai itself.
What we send to a third party (Anthropic)
When you talk to Kin, your message text is sent to Anthropic’s Claude API so the AI can generate a reply. Only the message you typed (plus a short system prompt that gives Kin its personality) is sent. We do not send your name, age, mood history, walks, or any other personal context unless it appears in the message you typed.
Anthropic processes the request to generate the reply. Per Anthropic’s policies, API requests are not used to train Anthropic’s models, but Anthropic may retain request data temporarily for abuse prevention. Please review Anthropic’s Privacy Policy and Usage Policy for full details.
If you ever change the LLM endpoint to your own server in Settings, requests go only to the URL you configure — Anthropic is no longer involved.
Health & Location data
- Steps and distance are read using Apple’s Core Motion framework only with your explicit permission. They are used inside Kinai to show your walks and never leave your device.
- Location is used only during an active walk session to draw your route. The route is stored locally with the walk entry. You can revoke location access in iOS Settings at any time.
Children
Kinai is rated 4+ but is designed for an adult audience interested in self-care. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone (since we don’t collect data at all). If a child uses the app, the same on-device-only behavior applies.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change how data is handled, we will update this page and increment the “Last updated” date.
